Omega 6 – The Other Essential Fatty Acid

Omega 6 – The Other Essential Fatty Acid

While we are most familiar with Omega 3 and its health benefits it seems that its little friend, Omega 6, is oftentimes over looked.

Omega 6 can be found in foods such as fish, whole grains and fruits, however sometimes we don’t get enough of our Omega’s from these foods if our diet is lacking. Supplementing your diet with extra Omega 6 can be beneficial to your overall health and wellbeing.

The University of Maryland states that along with Omega-3 fatty acids, Omega-6 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and development. Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), they help stimulate skin and hair growth, maintain bone health, regulate metabolism, and maintain the reproductive system.

Much like Omega 3, Omega 6 is also great for inflammation such as arthritis and skin conditions, like eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. However, studies have shown that Omega 6 can also help reduce high blood pressure, menopausal symptoms, and PMS.
